Monsoon Advances: Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Predicted Across India
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast indicating widespread rains, thunderstorms, and showers across various parts of India in the coming days. The southwest monsoon is expected to make further progress into states including Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh by June 23. This development brings relief from scorching summer heat in some regions but may also disrupt travel by road, rail, and air in tourist destinations prone to heavy rainfall.
Northeast and East India: Very Heavy Rainfall Alert
The northeastern region is likely to remain one of the wettest areas in the country. The IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall for Assam and Meghalaya, with extremely heavy rain at isolated places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Such intense precipitation could affect road connectivity and movement in hilly terrains, posing challenges for residents and travelers alike.
South and West India: Coastal Areas Brace for Downpour
Popular tourist destinations in southern and western India are also in for significant rainfall. Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to witness heavy showers in the coming days. Additionally, Konkan and Goa are predicted to experience increased rainfall starting June 22 onwards, which may impact travel plans and outdoor activities.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds in Northern and Central Regions
The IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several areas, including Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and eastern parts of the country. Wind speeds are forecasted to reach 40-50 kmph in certain areas, with higher gusts in isolated spots. Thundersqualls with winds between 50-60 kmph are also likely in Jharkhand and Odisha, potentially causing damage to structures and trees.
Heat Wave Conditions Persist in Some States
Despite the monsoon onset, heat wave conditions are expected to continue in parts of Bihar, Telangana, East Uttar Pradesh, and Vidarbha. This indicates that while many regions receive relief, some areas still face extreme temperatures. The IMD advises residents in these regions to take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Potential Weather-Related Disruptions
The IMD forecasts several weather-related disruptions over the next few days. Continuous rainfall may lead to localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas, reduced visibility, and traffic jams. Landslides and mudslides could occur in some hilly regions due to persistent rain, particularly in the Northeast and the Western Ghats. Travelers are advised to monitor local weather updates and plan accordingly.
