Government Assures Stable Fertilizer Supply Amid Middle East Crisis

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has sparked widespread concerns over potential disruptions to the supply of essential commodities, including fertilizers. In response to these worries, the Indian government has stepped forward to provide reassurance, stating that the country's fertilizer availability remains stable and secure.

Fertilizer Stocks Declared More Than Adequate

Addressing the media during an inter-ministerial briefing on the situation related to the conflict, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India currently possesses sufficient fertilizer reserves. This is particularly crucial as preparations begin for the upcoming Kharif season, which is vital for agricultural productivity.

"What I can tell you is that India has more than adequate stocks of fertilizers at this point of time, especially for the upcoming Kharif season," Jaiswal stated. He further noted that the country's urea reserves are currently higher than the levels recorded at the same time last year, providing a buffer against any potential shortages.

Detailed Stock Position and Production Insights

Jaiswal provided a detailed breakdown of the fertilizer stock position, highlighting significant improvements across key categories:

  • Urea: Stocks are more than what they were at this point last year.
  • DAP (Diammonium Phosphate): Reserves have doubled compared to the levels seen in 2025.
  • NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium): Stocks are also significantly higher compared with last year.

DAP is the most widely used phosphorus fertilizer, while NPK is suitable for all stages of plant growth, making these reserves critical for agricultural success.

Regarding domestic production, Jaiswal explained that urea output is currently expected to exceed nominal consumption levels, especially as the Rabi season is nearing its end. "In so far as our domestic production of urea is concerned, our current production will be more than our nominal consumption, especially since the Rabi season is coming to an end," he said.

Proactive Measures to Ensure Supply Stability

The government has implemented several proactive strategies to maximize fertilizer production and secure supplies. Jaiswal revealed that annual maintenance schedules at certain fertilizer plants were advanced to optimize output. "In addition, we had taken care to advance the scheduled annual maintenance of some our plants, which means that we are able to maximise production with available gas," he added.

In anticipation of potential disruptions linked to the current geopolitical situation, the Department of Fertilisers (DoF) has already issued global tenders. These tenders have received a very good response, with the bulk of quantities ordered expected to arrive from a variety of sources by the end of March. Furthermore, the DoF has decided to procure spot gas on a competitive basis, with the first phase purchase scheduled by Tuesday.

International Reassurances and Monitoring Efforts

Jaiswal also highlighted that India's international partners have reassured New Delhi of uninterrupted fertilizer shipments. "All our partners have assured us of uninterrupted supplies and we hope to attain and maintain comfortable fertiliser stocks by the time Kharif demand peaks by May 15," he said.

The Department of Fertilisers is closely monitoring both domestic and global trends, taking necessary steps to ensure adequate availability. Jaiswal urged commentators to rely on verified information when discussing supply concerns, stating, "Observers and commentators would do well to look at the factual situation and not induce panic through uninformed speculation."

This comprehensive assurance from the government aims to alleviate fears and ensure that agricultural activities proceed smoothly despite the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
