Indore Shivers Through Coldest February Night in Two Years
Indore witnessed its coldest February night in the last two years on Sunday, with the minimum temperature dropping sharply to 10.6 degrees Celsius, according to the Meteorological Department. This reading marks a significant dip compared to the lowest minimum temperatures recorded in February 2025 and 2024, which both stood at 12 degrees Celsius.
Sharp Drop in Temperature Creates Biting Cold Conditions
The temperature decline represented a further fall from the 10.9 degrees Celsius recorded just two days earlier, extending an unusual spell of intense night chill across the city. This drop led to biting cold conditions that persisted from evening through early morning hours.
Residents reported a sharp chill setting in immediately after sunset, with the cold lingering well past sunrise. However, strong sunshine during daytime hours helped balance conditions somewhat, with the maximum temperature reaching 29.6 degrees Celsius - approximately one degree above normal levels and providing mild warmth during afternoon periods.
Meteorological Data Reveals Significant Temperature Variations
Detailed meteorological data shows the minimum temperature was one degree below normal and 0.4 degrees lower than the previous day's reading. The large gap of over 18 degrees between daytime highs and nighttime lows created a noticeable shift in comfort levels within single 24-hour periods.
Wind patterns contributed to the conditions, with breezes blowing mainly from the north and north-east directions at speeds reaching up to 14 kilometers per hour. Satellite imagery confirmed clear conditions over Madhya Pradesh during the past 24 hours.
Atmospheric Systems Behind the Unusual Weather Pattern
The Meteorological Department has attributed this weather pattern to specific systems active at higher atmospheric levels. A western disturbance currently lies as a trough in middle and upper-level westerlies above 5.8 kilometers height, while the subtropical westerly jet stream continues over north India at approximately 12.6 kilometers altitude with high wind speeds.
Weather Forecast and Expected Changes
Met official Arun Sharma from the Bhopal meteorological centre provided insights into upcoming conditions, stating that no rainfall is expected in the state between February 9 and 12. No weather warnings have been issued for the region.
The minimum temperature is likely to remain steady for the next 24 hours, after which a rise of two to three degrees Celsius is expected as the western disturbance moves eastward. This gradual warming trend should bring relief from the current sharp night chill that has characterized Indore's weather in recent days.
