Maritime tracking data from Tuesday indicated that several vessels linked to Iran managed to transit the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, despite an ongoing US naval blockade. This development directly contradicts assertions from the United States military, which insisted that no ship had successfully breached the restrictions and that at least six merchant vessels were forced to turn back.
Tracking Data Details Specific Ship Movements
According to reports from the shipping analytics firm Kpler, cited by the AFP news agency, the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Christianna crossed the strait after unloading a significant cargo of 74,000 tonnes of corn at the Iranian port of Bandar Imam Khomeini in the Gulf. The vessel was tracked passing near Iran's Larak Island in the strait around Monday.
A second ship, the Comoros-flagged tanker Elpis, was observed near Larak Island at approximately 1100 GMT and was reported to have cleared the Strait of Hormuz by about 1600 GMT. Kpler data showed this tanker was loaded with 31,000 tonnes of methanol and had departed from the Iranian port of Bushehr in the Gulf on March 31.
The maritime tracker further indicated that other vessels, including the Argo Maris, which had also sailed from Iran, were among those that crossed during this period. However, maritime experts have issued cautions, noting that tracking data in this highly tense region remains notably unreliable, with signals frequently subject to disruption or deliberate manipulation.
US Military Maintains Blockade is Fully Effective
In stark contrast to the tracking reports, the US military has firmly stated that the naval blockade remains fully operational and effective. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement clarifying that "no ships made it past the US blockade" within the first 24 hours of its enforcement. CENTCOM reported that six merchant vessels complied with orders to turn back towards Iranian ports.
This blockade was announced by President Donald Trump following the collapse of peace talks with Tehran that were held in Pakistan. The restrictions apply comprehensively to all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports across the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM emphasized that the enforcement is being carried out "impartially" on ships of all nationalities, without exception.
