Iran Initiates International Legal Action Against US and Israel Over Alleged War of Aggression
In a significant diplomatic escalation, Iran has formally approached the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other global authorities, accusing the United States and Israel of launching an unprovoked war of aggression against the Islamic Republic. According to state media reports from Press TV, the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has confirmed the submission of 16 official letters demanding condemnation of the military actions that began in late February.
Diplomatic Push and Humanitarian Concerns
Razieh Alishvandi, the Deputy Head of IRCS for International and Human Rights Affairs, announced on Sunday that Iran is actively lobbying international bodies to take necessary legal measures in response to the attacks. She emphasized that the IRCS maintains daily communication with the International Federation of the Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross to address the crisis.
To date, five joint statements have been issued by the Iranian National Committee on Humanitarian Law and the IRCS, highlighting specific cases of human rights violations. These include documented attacks on:
- Medical centers and civilians
- IRCS ambulances
- The frigate IRIS Dena
Escalation and Retaliatory Measures
The current conflict is described as a fresh round of unlawful military aggression that commenced on February 28, following heightened tensions approximately eight months after previous unprovoked attacks on Iran. In retaliation, Tehran has launched extensive strikes using missiles and drones, successfully hitting targets in Israeli-occupied territories and US military assets in regional countries.
Massive Civilian Infrastructure Damage Reported
The humanitarian impact of the conflict has been severe, with IRCS Head Pir-Hossein Kolivand reporting extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. According to Press TV, 81,365 civilian units have been affected, including:
- 61,555 homes
- 19,050 commercial units
- Numerous medical centers, schools, and ambulances
In Tehran alone, the strikes have impacted:
- 24,605 residential and commercial units
- 275 pharmaceutical, health, and emergency centers
- 498 schools
- 17 Red Crescent centers
- 3 helicopters
Kolivand condemned these attacks as a gross violation of international humanitarian regulations and the Geneva Convention, stating that targeting such facilities constitutes a direct assault on lifelines that save human lives, not merely the destruction of buildings or vehicles.
Ongoing Legal and Documentation Efforts
The Iranian government continues to document these incidents as part of a broader legal strategy to hold the US and Israel accountable on the international stage. This move underscores Tehran's commitment to pursuing justice through global institutions amid ongoing military hostilities.
