Jharkhand's Top Forest Officer Champions Green Technology to Mitigate Environmental Damage
In a significant address at the 'All India Spring Art Camp' in Ranchi, Jharkhand's Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, Sanjeev Kumar, underscored the critical need to harmonize development with environmental sustainability. He called for the widespread adoption of green technology as a vital measure to reduce ecological harm.
Balancing Progress with Preservation
Speaking to an assembly of 55 prominent artists from across India, Kumar highlighted the urgency of integrating eco-friendly practices into rapid development. "Green technology should be adopted in this era of rapid development to minimise harm to nature," he asserted. "The state forest department is continuously creating awareness among people to adopt it, as nothing is beyond nature." This statement reflects a growing recognition of the imperative to protect natural resources while advancing economic growth.
Forest Cover on the Rise in Jharkhand
Kumar provided encouraging data on Jharkhand's environmental efforts, noting that forest cover in the state has increased by approximately 58 square kilometres, according to the 2023 National Forest Survey. "Forest cover is steadily increasing in the state. Earlier, it had increased by 110 sq km," he added, showcasing a positive trend in conservation initiatives. This progress underscores the effectiveness of sustained governmental and community actions in enhancing green spaces.
Art as a Catalyst for Nature Conservation
The art camp, organized by the Jharkhand forest department, served as a platform to fuse creativity with environmental advocacy. Kumar emphasized that "expressing emotions through painting and sketch art is one of the oldest forms of communication," and the event aimed to inspire collective action for nature preservation. "Take steps to save nature from destruction. Our efforts can only be successful when we bring about behavioural changes in our lifestyle that suit nature," he urged, linking artistic expression to tangible ecological outcomes.

- Shridhar Patnala from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur University warned, "Everyone has the right to live in nature, whether bird, animal, or human. We cannot detach ourselves from nature. Yet, people nowadays are becoming detached from it even while still living within it." He highlighted the psychological shift towards economic pursuits at nature's expense.
- Alay Kumar Ghosh from West Bengal critiqued modern development, stating, "Human beings think that they are developing and improving themselves. But, in reality, they are destroying themselves. They do not understand that by cornering nature in the name of development, they are putting themselves in a precarious situation." His artwork incorporated abstract symbols, including Brahmi script, to center nature in a complex world.
- Sonali Chauhan from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, focused on sparrow conservation, noting their decline due to environmental degradation. "Therefore, I want to urge people to love nature and create a conducive environment for the conservation of sparrows," she said.
- Ravindra Das from Bihar emphasized coexistence, remarking, "Everything exists in nature because of love and compassion. Humans and forests have always coexisted and cannot be separated. That is the crux of my painting."
Exhibition and Impact
The camp featured over 50 paintings by contemporary and local artists from states like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand, all dedicated to preserving nature. This gathering not only showcased artistic talent but also reinforced the message that environmental stewardship requires a multifaceted approach, combining policy, technology, and cultural engagement.
