Jammu & Kashmir Prepares for Inclement Weather as MeT Predicts Rain and Snowfall

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a significant weather advisory for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting a fresh spell of rain and snowfall from March 28 to 31. This development comes as the region experiences fluctuating temperatures, with authorities urging caution for agricultural activities and travel plans.

Weather Forecast Details and Advisory

According to the MeT, moderate snowfall is expected at a few higher reaches, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds at many locations during the specified period. In response, the department has advised farmers to suspend all agricultural operations from March 26 and between March 29 and 31 to mitigate potential crop damage. Travelers are also encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly, considering the anticipated adverse conditions.

The forecast indicates that snowfall is likely in the higher elevations, while rainfall is predicted for the plains. This weather pattern could lead to disruptions in daily life and transportation across the UT.

Temperature Trends and Recorded Extremes

Recent temperature data reveals notable deviations from seasonal norms. In many parts of the Kashmir division, maximum day temperatures have been recorded 2–4°C above normal, with Kupwara registering the highest at 19.2°C. Conversely, in the Jammu division, temperatures were 0–2°C above normal, with Kathua reaching 28.2°C.

Travel Disruptions and Safety Measures

In light of the forecast, traffic movement has already been impacted. Slow traffic was observed on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway due to single-lane operations between Marog and Kishtwari Path. Traffic police have issued advisories recommending that passenger vehicles and light motor vehicles (LMVs) travel during daylight hours only.

Key safety guidelines include:

  • Avoiding night travel due to risks of shooting stones and landslides.
  • Being mindful of ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal, which may cause inconvenience.
  • On the Srinagar–Leh highway, vehicles will only be permitted after clearance from road maintenance agencies, with LMVs requiring anti-skid chains for travel from Srinagar to Kargil.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated with official announcements and prepare for potential weather-related challenges in the coming days.
