July rains cut Karnataka's rainfall deficit; 8 districts still short

July rains have significantly improved Karnataka's overall rainfall deficit, but eight districts continue to report shortages, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

Rainfall Deficit Update

As of July 6, 2026, the state's cumulative rainfall deficit has narrowed from 38% in June to 22% after the first week of July. However, several districts remain critically dry.

Vijayanagara is the worst affected district, reporting nearly 61% deficit rainfall. It is followed by Mysuru (55%), Kodagu (51%), Chikkamagaluru (48%), Davangere (47%), Haveri (46%), Shivamogga (44%), Kalaburagi and Dakshina Kannada (43%), and Bidar (40%).

Regional Disparities

While coastal and southern interior districts have seen some improvement, northern Karnataka continues to struggle. The KSNDMC noted that the southwest monsoon has been active over the past week, bringing relief to many regions.

"The recent rains have helped reduce the deficit, but we need sustained precipitation over the next few weeks to fully recover," said a KSNDMC official.

Impact on Agriculture

Farmers in deficit districts face challenges with sowing and crop health. The agriculture department has advised farmers to opt for drought-resistant crops and use water-saving techniques.

The government is monitoring the situation closely and may announce relief measures if the deficit persists.
