The sharp dip in temperature was accompanied by dense fog, which severely reduced visibility and impacted early morning routines across the city. However, a dramatic change unfolded by 9 am as the sun broke through the haze. The daytime warmth provided considerable relief, with the maximum temperature soaring to 23.6 degrees Celsius. This reading was notably 3.2 degrees above the normal seasonal average for the region.
Parks Bustle as Residents Soak Up the Sun
Taking advantage of the pleasant afternoon weather, citizens of all ages flocked to popular recreational spots. With schools remaining closed due to the intense cold wave, children, parents, and senior citizens crowded parks such as Moti Jheel. The sunshine remained inviting until around 4:30 pm, offering a perfect respite from the chilly nights and mornings. The festive atmosphere in public spaces underscored how residents maximized the sunny window.
Weather Expert's Analysis and Forecast
Sunil Pandey, a weather expert at CSA University, provided insights into the prevailing conditions. He stated that night temperatures across Uttar Pradesh, including the Kanpur division, are expected to see fluctuations. Residents can anticipate relatively mild conditions during the night, morning, and evening hours in the coming days.
Pandey added that these periods might also offer some relief from pollution and persistent fog. On the topic of rainfall, he indicated that the chances for the Kanpur division remain almost negligible due to the absence of favourable climatic systems currently.
However, he pointed out a developing situation that could alter forecasts. Cyclonic systems are forming over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Their potential strengthening could improve the possibility of rainfall in the future, though no immediate impact is expected.
IMD Predicts Continued Fog Patterns
Aligning with local observations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that morning and evening fog will likely persist. This is attributed to the high humidity levels in the atmosphere. The forecast, however, also includes continued afternoon sunshine and a slowing of the northwesterly winds, which contribute to the daytime warming trend.
As dusk fell on Saturday, the fog made a swift return, enveloping Kanpur by 8 pm, signaling a return to the cold nighttime conditions. The cycle of cold, foggy nights and mornings followed by warm, sunny afternoons is set to continue, defining the city's current winter weather pattern.
