Kerala's First CBG Plant Inaugurated in Kochi, Converts 150 Tonnes of Waste Daily
Kerala's First CBG Plant Launched in Kochi

Kerala's First Compressed Biogas Plant Commissioned in Kochi

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated a state-of-the-art compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Brahmapuram in Kochi on Friday. This landmark facility, constructed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), marks Kerala's first operational CBG plant dedicated to treating biodegradable municipal solid waste (MSW).

Plant Capacity and Output

The plant is designed to process an impressive 150 tonnes of source-segregated biodegradable municipal solid waste every single day. Through this advanced waste-to-energy conversion, it will generate 5.6 tonnes of compressed biogas and 28 tonnes of high-quality organic manure daily. Chief Minister Vijayan emphasized that this project represents a mutually beneficial partnership between BPCL and the local municipal corporation.

Advanced Waste Processing Technology

The facility employs a sophisticated multi-stage treatment process. Initially, the waste undergoes thorough pre-treatment, which includes:

  • Removal of non-biodegradable materials such as plastics and metals
  • Precise segregation of biodegradable components
  • Shredding of organic matter into smaller particles
  • Mixing with water to create a uniform slurry

This prepared slurry is then fed into large anaerobic digesters, where it decomposes in an oxygen-free environment. This anaerobic digestion process naturally produces biogas and digestate as valuable by-products.

Biogas Purification and Utilization

The raw biogas undergoes a comprehensive cleaning process to remove impurities including carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. Once purified, the biogas is compressed and transported through a dedicated pipeline directly to the Kochi Refinery, where it serves as a clean, renewable fuel source.

Organic Manure Production

The digestate by-product is further processed and separated into both solid and liquid organic manure. This nutrient-rich fertilizer is suitable for agricultural reuse or commercial sale, creating an additional revenue stream while promoting sustainable farming practices.

Infrastructure and Safety Features

The plant incorporates advanced automation systems, comprehensive safety protocols, and dedicated power infrastructure to ensure stable, efficient, and secure operations around the clock.

Long-Term Waste Management Solution

This innovative project provides a sustainable, long-term solution to Kochi's municipal waste management challenges by transforming waste into valuable clean energy and useful agricultural products.

Dignitaries and Collaborative Efforts

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi, who highlighted the collaborative nature of this achievement. He credited the successful realization of the plant to the joint efforts of the state government, municipal corporation, BPCL, and the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Minister Gopi specifically acknowledged the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah in making this project possible. He revealed that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is establishing 195 CBG plants nationwide to promote compressed biogas adoption, with seven additional plants planned for Kerala.

Kerala's Waste Management Transformation

Local Self-Government Minister M B Rajesh, who presided over the ceremony, described how Kerala is transforming the disastrous Brahmapuram fire incident into an opportunity to usher in a new era of waste-free living. He announced that 90% of the waste "hills" at Brahmapuram have already been removed, putting Kerala on track to become India's first state without dump sites in the coming years.

Future Expansion Plans

Minister Rajesh disclosed that a second CBG plant in Palakkad will be inaugurated within two months. Additional plants are planned for Kollam, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, and Changanassery, significantly expanding Kerala's waste-to-energy infrastructure.

Distinguished Attendees

The ceremony was graced by numerous dignitaries including P Rajeeve, Minister of Law, Industries and Coir; Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) with additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director at BPCL; Adv P V Sreenijin, MLA Kunnathunadu; Mayor Minimol V K; Chacko M Jose, Executive Director of BPCL Kochi Refinery; and Anupama T V, Secretary of LSGD.
