Kodagu Forest Department Intensifies Wildfire Prevention Ahead of Summer Season

The forest department in Kodagu district is proactively implementing robust measures to control and prevent forest fires as the summer season approaches. With heightened vigilance, the department is focusing on safeguarding forest fringes located along national and state highways, deploying a significant force to monitor these critical areas.

Enhanced Monitoring and Deployment in Vulnerable Zones

Over 60 forest personnel have been assigned to monitor and ensure safety across the forest fringes throughout the district. Particular attention is being directed towards the Annekadu and Thithimathi-Anechowkuru regions, which are identified as more susceptible to accidental forest fires due to their proximity to national highways.

Devaraj, the Mathigodu Range Forest Officer (RFO), confirmed the strategic enhancements: "In view of the increasing forest areas in the Mattigodu forest and Chennangi area, an additional 65 fire watchmen have been appointed and 5 watchtowers were constructed." He further explained that senior officers are conducting regular beat inspections to oversee the arrangements aimed at curbing forest fires effectively.

Strategic Fire Lines and Rapid Response Teams

The department has completed drawing fire lines along the vulnerable forest fringes, a crucial step in creating barriers to slow or stop the spread of wildfires. Additional staff have been deployed to these areas to monitor safety measures continuously.

To ensure rapid response in case of emergencies, the department has optimized fire brigade deployment. Previously, fire brigade vehicles were dispatched from Gonikoppal, which could cause delays. Now, a fire brigade team has been stationed directly in front of the Mathigodu forest office to expedite response times.

Role of Fire Watchmen and Highway Surveillance

The department has deployed specialized 'fire watchmen' who are tasked with monitoring developments along the highways that line the forest fringes. Their responsibilities include:

  • Keeping a check on unnecessary parking of vehicles near forest areas.
  • Curbing cases of littering on the forest fringes, which can exacerbate fire risks.
  • Alerting the department immediately in case of any accidental fire outbreaks.

The RFO detailed the deployment strategy: "These fire personnel were deployed every 200 metres on the Anechowkuru-Hunsuru route lining the forest." This dense placement ensures comprehensive coverage and quick detection of potential hazards.

Expanded Measures Across the District

Similar preventive measures have been extended to other forest regions in Kodagu district. Fire lines have been drawn in areas including Kushalnagar and Somwarpet, demonstrating a district-wide approach to wildfire prevention. The department's efforts underscore a commitment to protecting forest ecosystems and ensuring public safety as temperatures rise during the summer months.
