Kolkata Weather Forecast: Intense Heat and Humidity for Five Days
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for Kolkata, predicting a prolonged period of warm and humid conditions over the next five days. According to weather scientists, the maximum temperature could soar as high as 37°C during this scorching spell, with no significant relief in sight.
Current Weather Conditions and Predictions
On Saturday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2°C, which was one degree below the normal level. However, the minimum temperature stood at 27.3°C, a notch above normal. The real feel temperature, which measures how heat is actually perceived on the skin, exceeded 38°C, highlighting the discomfort residents are experiencing.
Weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay from the Regional Meteorological Centre stated, "The maximum temperature may climb up to 35°C on Sunday, and the entire week will be warm and uncomfortable. Solar ray intensity will be high, and there is no relief expected for at least the next five days."
Factors Contributing to the Heatwave
The Met office attributes the rising mercury to the absence of any significant rain-triggering systems in the region. Dry westerly and northwesterly winds are currently blowing into south Bengal and Kolkata, exacerbating the heat. Solar heating is expected to add to these conditions, making the weather particularly harsh.
While thunderstorms were reported in some areas of Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, and north Bengal, these are now expected to become localized and few. Bandopadhyay added, "Some neighbouring districts may receive thunderstorms, but Kolkata is likely to remain dry throughout this period."
Impact and Advisory
Residents of Kolkata are advised to take precautions against the intense heat and high humidity. The combination of elevated temperatures and strong solar intensity could lead to health risks such as heat exhaustion or dehydration. It is recommended to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and use cooling measures where possible.
The weather forecast underscores a challenging week ahead for the city, with persistent warm conditions dominating the meteorological landscape. Authorities urge the public to stay updated with real-time weather alerts and follow safety guidelines to mitigate the effects of this heatwave.
