Koppal's Anti-Pollution Protest Reaches 100-Day Milestone with Major Convention
A significant public sit-in protest in the Koppal district, opposing the proposed establishment of a large private steel plant and other polluting industries, successfully completed 100 days on Saturday. The Joint Action Committee, which is spearheading the agitation, organized a substantial convention to commemorate this notable occasion, drawing widespread attention to environmental and public health concerns.
Prominent Leaders and Activists Unite for the Cause
The convention saw active participation from several distinguished religious leaders, social activists, and acclaimed writers, highlighting the broad-based support for the movement. Key speakers included Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji of Sanehalli, Siddarama Swamiji of Tontadarya Mutt in Gadag, writer Ramjan Darga, and theatre personality Suryakanta GunakiMath. Their addresses focused on the urgent issues of environmental degradation, public health risks, and the detrimental effects of industrial pollution on local agriculture and livestock.

- Conduct a comprehensive health survey in 20 villages identified as pollution-affected to assess the impact on residents.
- Initiate the relocation of factories based on expert recommendations to mitigate environmental harm.
- Close industries allegedly polluting the Tungabhadra River to protect water resources and public health.
- Supply treated drinking water for both residents and livestock until permanent solutions are implemented.
- Immediate restoration of the Basapur lake for public use, enhancing local water access and recreational opportunities.
- Oppose the granting of environmental clearance for the expansion of another steel factory, preventing further industrial encroachment.
Additional Initiatives and Community Participation
As part of the event, Manjunath Sajjan organized a blood donation camp in collaboration with the Red Cross Society, demonstrating the community's commitment to social welfare alongside environmental activism. The convention also featured participation from literary figures such as Ramjan Darga and Suryakant GunakiMath, District Lawyers Association president AV Kanavi, general convener Allama Prabhu Bettadur, and numerous other prominent citizens, reinforcing the movement's diverse and influential backing.
