Chennai's Korattur Lake Hosts Vibrant Eri Pongal Rally for Conservation
In a colorful display of tradition and environmental activism, residents of Chennai gathered at Korattur Lake on Sunday morning for the annual Eri Pongal celebration. Clad in traditional dhotis and saris, participants carried clay pots and sugarcane stalks as they marched along the lake bund, symbolizing a united effort to protect this vital waterbody.
A Collective Call to Action for Lake Protection
The rally, organized by the Korattur Lake Protection People Movement, aimed to transform the 594-acre lake into a bird sanctuary. Participants held placards and raised slogans after the march, followed by the ceremonial cooking of pongal in five clay pots to mark the occasion. Sekaran, president of the movement, emphasized the event's significance, stating, "This is the eighth year we are doing this. The lake has faced several issues, from encroachment to pollution, and even residents have turned a blind eye. People need to be consistently reminded of the issues plaguing the lake. This festival does just that."
Cultural Programs and Educational Initiatives
The celebration featured a range of cultural activities designed to engage the community. Kolam contests and musical chair games were among the main attractions, while extempore competitions were held for students from corporation schools in Chennai. V Balan, a resident of Korattur agraharam, noted, "The festival is like a second Pongal for us, it carries a purpose." These programs not only entertained but also fostered awareness about the lake's ecological importance.
Innovative Steps Towards Conservation
A key highlight of this year's event was the launch of a dedicated website for the Korattur Lake Protection People Movement. Sekaran explained, "Every year, we do something unique. Last year, a document on birds was released." This digital initiative aims to enhance outreach and provide resources for ongoing conservation efforts, building on previous years' achievements.
The Eri Pongal rally at Korattur Lake serves as a powerful reminder of the community's role in safeguarding natural resources. Through traditional rituals, cultural events, and modern tools like the new website, residents are uniting to address challenges such as pollution and encroachment, ensuring the lake's preservation for future generations.
