Leopard Attack Claims Life of Seven-Year-Old Boy in Lakhimpur Kheri
In a tragic incident, the partially eaten body of a seven-year-old boy was discovered seven hours after a leopard dragged him away from a wheat field in Nibauria village, located in the Lakhimpur Kheri district. Police confirmed the details on Sunday, highlighting the growing concerns over human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
Details of the Attack
The victim, identified as Dilshad, was playing in the field with other children of laborers when the leopard attacked him around 6 PM on Saturday. His parents were nearby, engaged in harvesting wheat, when the sudden assault occurred. A joint team comprising police officers, forest officials, and local villagers later found his body, with one leg consumed by the animal.
Response from Authorities
Bhupendra Singh, the range officer of the North Nighasan forest range, provided updates on the situation. "The body has been sent for autopsy, and the case will be referred to the state forest administration for compensation to the parents," he stated. The compensation amount is set at Rs 5 lakh, which includes Rs 4 lakh from the state disaster relief fund and an additional Rs 1 lakh from the forest department.
To address the immediate threat, the forest department has implemented several measures. Two cages with live bait have been placed to trap the leopard, and four cameras have been installed to identify the animal. Furthermore, three teams of forest staff have been deployed in the area to monitor its movements, with drones also being utilized for enhanced surveillance.
Recurring Incidents in the Region
This marks the second such leopard attack in the Singhai police station area within less than a month. Earlier, on March 24, a seven-year-old girl named Paramjeet Kaur was dragged away by a leopard from the courtyard of a farmhouse in Sidhauna village. Forest staff later recovered her body from a nearby field, underscoring the persistent danger posed by wildlife in these rural communities.
The repeated attacks have raised alarms about the need for more robust wildlife management strategies and preventive measures to safeguard local residents, especially children, from such fatal encounters.
