Panic spread among villagers in the Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district after a leopard was spotted at Sanapur Lake Hill on Saturday morning. The sighting, captured on mobile phones by onlookers, has heightened fears in a region that has witnessed repeated leopard activity over the past week.
Unusual Monkey Alerts Lead to Discovery
According to local residents, the incident began when they heard monkeys screaming unusually early in the morning near Lake Hill. This prompted them to look towards the hillock, where they observed a leopard moving around the area. Some villagers managed to record the visuals on their phones, and the footage quickly circulated, amplifying concerns within the community.
Recent Leopard Movements Heighten Tensions
Over the past week, leopards have been reportedly sighted in multiple locations, including Anegondi, Jangli, Hanumanahalli, Pampa lake, and Sanapur. This pattern has intensified anxiety among residents, who are now calling for urgent intervention from the forest department.
"We need immediate action to prevent any untoward incidents," said villagers from Anegondi and Sanapur, urging officials to place cages and rescue the leopards.
Seasonal Patterns and Tourism Concerns
This region typically experiences increased leopard movement between January and March each year. This period coincides with the peak tourist season, raising alarms not only among villagers but also among owners of homestays and resorts operating in and around the heritage zone. The potential for human-wildlife conflict is a significant worry during this time.
Previous Incidents and Current Demands
Last month, two leopards were spotted in the Vanibhadreshwar hill area of Siddikeri in Gangavathi taluk. Both animals were successfully rescued by the forest department, providing temporary relief. However, the latest sighting has reignited calls for preventive measures.
Sangamesh Patil, a resident of Anegondi, has appealed to the district administration and forest department to:
- Install cages in areas where leopards have been sighted
- Erect warning boards to alert the public
- Restrict night movement in the Sanapur lake and hill areas
