Ludhiana Authorities Launch Multi-Pronged Attack on Buddha Dariya Pollution
In a significant move to combat environmental degradation, Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal chaired a high-level project review meeting at the Municipal Corporation Zone D office in Ludhiana on Tuesday. The session, attended by Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta, focused primarily on halting the flow of cow dung into the historic Buddha Dariya water body.
Strict Enforcement Measures Announced
During the meeting, authorities issued clear directives to the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to take immediate action against violators. Dairy units found dumping waste into the stream will face penalties and have their power supply disconnected, marking a tough stance against environmental negligence.
The gathering included MC Joint Commissioners Vineet Kumar and Amanpreet Singh, Councillor Indu Munish Shah, SE Ekjot Singh, along with officials from PPCB, PSPCL, and the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA). Notably, the contractor responsible for door-to-door cow dung collection was also present to discuss implementation strategies.
Accelerating Sustainable Solutions
PEDA officials received specific instructions to expedite the installation of bio-gas plants at both the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes. These facilities aim to transform waste into energy, addressing pollution while creating renewable resources.
MP Seechewal highlighted that a 'Seechewal Model' pond has already been established in the Haibowal complex. This innovative structure prevents dung from reaching effluent treatment plants (ETPs), ensuring they operate efficiently without being overwhelmed by organic waste.
To streamline waste collection, the contractor has deployed specialized carts within the dairy complexes, enhancing the lifting process and reducing the likelihood of improper disposal.
Industrial Waste Monitoring Intensified
Beyond dairy pollution, the meeting addressed industrial contamination. PPCB and MC officials were instructed to maintain strict vigilance over dyeing units to prevent untreated industrial waste from entering the Dariya or civic sewer lines. The PPCB must ensure continuous compliance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives regarding the dyeing industry, reinforcing regulatory oversight.
This comprehensive review follows recent inspections conducted by MP Seechewal at the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes, where he issued several necessary instructions to improve waste management practices.
Public Appeal for Community Involvement
Moving beyond administrative measures, MP Seechewal and Mayor Inderjit Kaur made a heartfelt appeal to residents. They urged the public to support authorities by ceasing the dumping of waste into the Buddha Dariya, emphasizing its religious and historic significance.
The officials stressed that rejuvenating this vital water body cannot be achieved without active public participation. By combining strict enforcement against industrial violators with community involvement, the administration aims to restore the Dariya to its former glory while modernizing waste management through bio-gas technology and specialized pond models.
This integrated approach represents a landmark effort in Ludhiana's environmental conservation, targeting both immediate pollution sources and long-term sustainable solutions.
