Madurai Trichy Railway Launch Environment Day Campaign

Madurai and Trichy railway divisions have launched the nationwide three-week World Environment Day Campaign 2026, running from May 15 to June 5, under the theme Climate Change and Challenges Posed to Mother Earth.

Madurai Division Kickoff

In Madurai, the campaign began on Friday with the administration of an environmental pledge to officers and staff at the divisional railway manager's office. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Omprakash Meena led the pledge ceremony.

Trichy Division Rally

In Trichy, the day was marked by an environment awareness rally at Trichy Junction railway station. DRM Balak Ram Negi officially flagged off the rally from platform 1, which proceeded up to platform 5. Trainees from the Multi-Disciplinary Zonal Training Institute (MDZTI) actively participated, distributing pamphlets to passengers on platforms, travelers in Jan Shatabdi Express and Cholan Express, and other railway users.

Campaign Focus Areas

The campaign will emphasize climate change mitigation, cleanliness and waste management, reduction of single-use plastic, adoption of sustainable practices, promotion of green and sustainable railway operations, tree plantation activities, water and energy conservation, and various awareness drives involving railway staff, passengers, the general public, Scouts/NCC, social groups, public influencers, and dignitaries throughout the campaign period.

Buttermilk Distribution in Madurai

Considering the summer heat and struggles faced by rail users, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has started providing buttermilk to passengers at Madurai Junction. They will supply 500 liters of buttermilk daily until the end of the summer season.

Trichy Division Initiatives

The Trichy division will also conduct tree plantation drives, awareness programs on waste management and pollution control, rainwater harvesting promotion, plastic reduction campaigns, encouragement of digital ticketing and paperless travel, and efficient electricity usage. The initiative aims to foster eco-friendly habits among passengers, railway staff, and the general public, contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.
