Manas National Park Concludes Landmark International Elephant Welfare Training
Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve in Guwahati, Assam, has successfully wrapped up a significant international training program dedicated to modernizing the management and welfare of captive Asian elephants. This forward-thinking initiative marks a crucial step toward improving the lives of these majestic animals and their caretakers.
Collaborative Effort with Global and Local Experts
The training brought together a diverse team of specialists, including experts from the Australian-based Human Elephant Learning Programmes (HELP) foundation. They were joined by dedicated teams from Kaziranga National Park and the Wildlife Trust of India, creating a powerful coalition focused on elephant conservation.
According to MNP&TR Field Director C Ramesh, the HELP foundation team conducted intensive sessions with a carefully selected group of mahouts from both Manas and Kaziranga. The curriculum emphasized welfare-friendly practices that replace traditional, often harsher, methods with positive pressure-release reinforcement techniques.
Science-Backed Curriculum for Modern Management
The comprehensive training covered all aspects of modern elephant care, grounded in scientific principles to ensure the well-being of both elephants and mahouts. Key components included:
- Implementing positive reinforcement strategies to foster trust and cooperation.
- Developing stress-free veterinary procedures that benefit animals and medical staff alike.
- Enhancing daily management protocols to promote calm and safe interactions.
The primary objective of this program is to ensure that all interactions between humans and elephants are conducted in a calm, safe manner. This is not only vital for routine management tasks but also essential for performing veterinary procedures without causing distress to the animals or the healthcare professionals involved.
This initiative reflects a growing global shift toward more ethical and effective wildlife management practices, positioning Manas National Park as a leader in elephant welfare innovation within India and beyond.
