Mother Elephant's Patience and Cooperation Key in Dramatic Calf Rescue in Valparai
A remarkable wildlife rescue operation unfolded in the serene coffee estates of Valparai, where a three-year-old male elephant calf found itself in a perilous situation after accidentally falling into a ground-level water tank. The incident, which occurred in the Villonie estate within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), saw the calf plunge into the 15-foot-deep tank after stepping on a steel wire mesh covering it.
Alert and Swift Response by Estate Employees and Forest Department
Estate employees quickly noticed the distressed mother elephant attempting to rescue her trapped calf and immediately alerted the forest department. In response, the forest department dispatched two specialized teams comprising 30 members of the anti-depredation squad (ADS). These teams were led by dedicated range officers M Suresh Krishnan and Giridharan, who coordinated the complex rescue efforts.
The tank, which contained water to a depth of eight feet, posed a significant challenge. The rescue team first drained the water to reduce the risk to the calf. Subsequently, they employed an excavator to strategically break down a portion of the tank's structure. To create a safe exit path, the team filled the broken section with soil, allowing the calf a means to climb out.
Mother Elephant's Remarkable Behavior During the Rescue
What made this rescue particularly extraordinary was the behavior of the mother elephant. Initially, she was reluctant to move aside as the rescue team arrived, but upon realizing their intent to help, she cooperatively stepped back. Range officer Suresh Krishnan recounted the heartwarming moment: "Once we filled the tank with soil, the mother elephant actively assisted by using her trunk to lift the calf and pull it out of the tank."
This display of patience and understanding highlights the deep bond between the mother and her calf, as well as a rare instance of interspecies cooperation. The calf emerged from the ordeal without any injuries, thanks to the careful execution of the rescue plan and the mother's timely intervention.
