Madhya Pradesh Battles Severe Thunderstorms and Hailstorms, IMD Issues Extensive Weather Alerts

Madhya Pradesh was lashed by intense thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on Thursday and Friday, providing a sharp and much-needed respite from the scorching heat across the state. The turbulent conditions resulted from multiple weather systems colliding overhead, creating widespread atmospheric instability.

IMD Issues Warnings for Rough Weather Through the Weekend

The India Meteorological Department has issued serious alerts for continued rough weather throughout the weekend. Specific warnings for thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms and strong winds have been issued for seven northern and eastern districts: Datia, Bhind, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, Tikamgarh, and Niwari.

A broader caution covering thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds blankets an extensive area encompassing 25 districts. This includes major urban centers such as Bhopal, Sheopur, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, Anuppur, Shahdol, Umaria, Dindori, Katni, Panna, Damoh, Chhatarpur, Maihar, Vidisha, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Betul, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Morena, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara, Sagar, and Pandhurna.

Rainfall or drizzle with thunderstorms remains highly possible across nearly this same expansive stretch, keeping residents and authorities on high alert.

Weather Systems Driving the Turbulence

The driving force behind this meteorological turbulence is a significant western disturbance manifesting as a trough that stretches from north Pakistan to southwest Madhya Pradesh across Punjab and Rajasthan. This system operates between 3.1 and 12.6 kilometers above mean sea level, creating ideal conditions for severe weather.

Persistent cyclonic circulations are hovering over Haryana at 1.5 kilometers altitude, as well as over northwest Madhya Pradesh and south Uttar Pradesh at 0.9 kilometers. Additional troughs link these systems to Gujarat, Vidarbha, and extend as far as Nagaland via Jharkhand and West Bengal, creating a complex weather pattern across central and northern India.

Fresh disturbances are expected to affect northwest India starting March 22, with intensification anticipated by March 26, potentially prolonging the unsettled weather conditions.

Temperature Drop and Recent Weather Impact

Bhopal recorded a significant temperature drop on Friday, with a daytime high of 29.4 degrees Celsius—six degrees below normal—and a nighttime low of 16.6 degrees, which is two degrees under the average. Saturday forecasts predict partly cloudy skies with temperatures reaching 30 degrees during the day and 18 degrees at night, accompanied by winds of 12 kilometers per hour.

In the past 24 hours through Friday morning at 8:30 AM, hailstorms impacted multiple districts including Alirajpur, Badwani, Betul, Khandwa, Agar, Vidisha, Chhindwara, Jabalpur, Damoh, Seoni, and Chhatarpur. Rainfall measurements topped 19 millimeters in Badnawar, while wind gusts peaked at a substantial 74 kilometers per hour in Agar, demonstrating the intensity of the weather systems.

The severe weather has disrupted normal life across Madhya Pradesh, with authorities advising residents to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather bulletins from the IMD.
