Mumbai Weather Update: Light Rains Expected on April 21-22
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting light rains and thundershowers for Mumbai and Thane districts on April 21 and 22. This announcement comes as residents grapple with rising summer temperatures, offering a brief respite from the heat.
Forecast Details for Mumbai Metropolitan Region
According to the latest IMD bulletin, Mumbai and Thane are likely to experience light rainfall or thundershowers during the specified dates. In contrast, parts of Raigad district are forecast to witness more intense weather conditions, including thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rains, and gusty winds. These variations highlight the localized nature of monsoon patterns in the region.
Expert Analysis on Temperature Trends
Weather experts caution that while the predicted rainfall may lead to a temporary dip in temperatures, significant relief from the ongoing heat is unlikely. Being the peak summer season, any cooling effect is expected to be short-lived, with temperatures likely to rise again from around April 23 into the weekend. This pattern underscores the persistent dominance of summer heat across Maharashtra.
On Sunday, day temperatures recorded by IMD observatories were 33.9 degrees Celsius at Colaba and 34.8 degrees Celsius at Santacruz. The Colaba reading was around normal, while Santacruz recorded temperatures two degrees above normal. Minimum temperatures were 24.5 degrees Celsius at Colaba and 24.1 degrees Celsius at Santacruz, with Colaba slightly below normal and Santacruz around normal. Relative humidity remained high, with Colaba at 83% and Santacruz at 66%.
Independent Forecaster Predicts Widespread Thunderstorms
Independent weather forecaster Abhijit Modak provided additional insights, stating, "The next round of hit-or-miss thunderstorms is expected to commence across Maharashtra from April 18-19, mainly along the ghat sections. This activity is likely to spread further into Marathwada and Vidarbha early next week, driven by low-level wind convergence along with moisture support from an upper-level Western Disturbance trough."
Modak emphasized that despite these weather events, heat will continue to dominate next week as well. Along the coastal areas, temperatures may rise to around 36-38°C on some days, depending on the timing of the sea breeze. This forecast aligns with the broader trend of summer heatwaves affecting the region.
Air Quality and Additional Updates
Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai on Sunday was recorded at 89, which falls in the satisfactory range. This indicates relatively clean air conditions amidst the weather fluctuations. Residents are advised to stay updated with real-time weather alerts and prepare for variable conditions in the coming days.
The combination of forecasted rains and persistent heat highlights the dynamic weather patterns typical of this season. Authorities recommend taking necessary precautions during thunderstorms and staying hydrated to cope with the heat.
