Nagpur's First Post-Monsoon Rain Breaks Prolonged Dry Spell
Heavy overnight showers brought a sudden and welcome change in weather across Nagpur, with the city recording approximately 10mm of rainfall. This precipitation offered much-needed relief from the prolonged dry spell that had persisted since October of last year. These were the first significant showers after October, as the region remained mostly arid throughout that period.
Weather Conditions and Local Impact
Intermittent rain accompanied by cloudy skies was reported from several localities across Nagpur. During the early morning hours, waterlogging was observed in low-lying areas, causing minor disruptions. However, by daytime, conditions eased significantly, and the weather in Nagpur remained largely breezy and pleasant.
Broader Weather Disturbance Across Vidarbha
This rainfall spell was part of a broader weather disturbance affecting the entire Vidarbha region. Neighboring districts including Bhandara, Wardha, Chandrapur, Yavatmal, and Gadchiroli also received thundershowers. Gusty winds reaching up to 50kmph were reported at isolated places, adding to the intensity of the weather event.
Meteorological Warnings and Alerts
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued a yellow alert for six districts in the region. This alert warns of light to moderate rain, gusty winds, and isolated thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. Officials emphasized that residents should remain cautious and prepared for potential weather-related hazards.
Causes Behind the Unusual Weather Activity
RMC officials clarified that the weather activity was not due to any local system but was linked to a larger synoptic disturbance. A system over the Bay of Bengal, along with a trough extending from Marathwada up to Karnataka, drew moisture into the region. This influx of moisture led to the rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds experienced across Vidarbha.
Forecast Adjustments and Explanations
Explaining why Nagpur was not highlighted earlier in weather forecasts, an official noted that weather focus can shift as troughs oscillate. Sometimes the impact is limited to a few districts, and at other times it expands. Initially, the emphasis was more on Chandrapur, but due to changes in the trough position, Nagpur also came under its influence.
Duration and Nature of the Weather Event
The official stated that such weather activity is expected to persist for up to three days, after which conditions might stabilize. "We review the situation every half hour. Small convective cells can suddenly develop, especially during seasonal transitions. One such cell passed lightly around 2 am, while another around 4 am was more intense and caused scattered rain over parts of Nagpur," the official explained.
Rarity of the Post-Monsoon Spell
Terming it a rare post-monsoon spell, the official added that this was the first significant rain after the monsoon in a long time, as the winter so far remained largely dry. This event marks a notable departure from the typical weather patterns observed in the region during this season.
