Nagpur NGO Mobilizes Support for Maharashtrians Trapped in Kuwait Amid Regional Conflict
A social organization based in Nagpur has initiated a coordinated humanitarian assistance effort for passengers from Maharashtra who have reportedly been stranded in Kuwait since February 28. The disruption stems from the ongoing Gulf conflict, which has severely halted onward travel to the United Kingdom, leaving many travelers in a precarious situation.
Stranded Passengers Include Students and Families
According to The Platform for Justice and Human Rights, the organization leading the initiative, numerous stranded individuals were traveling on India-London routes with transit stops in Kuwait. Among those affected are a student and a family that includes a 4-year-old child, highlighting the diverse and vulnerable nature of the group.
With flight schedules and transit permissions thrown into uncertainty due to the war, volunteers associated with the NGO have leveraged contacts in Saudi Arabia to provide crucial guidance. They successfully assisted the student in navigating the complex transit process, offering support during his onward journey. On Sunday, the student managed to arrange a new flight from Saudi Arabia to London using his personal funds, showcasing a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
Financial Hardships and Soaring Ticket Prices
However, the situation remains dire for several others who lack the financial resources to rebook tickets. The prices of flights have skyrocketed as a direct consequence of the conflict, exacerbating the plight of those stranded. For the family with the young child, volunteers are actively engaged in efforts to secure temporary accommodation and basic necessities such as food, while awaiting clarity on travel arrangements.
Widespread Calls for Assistance Across the Region
The organization's members report receiving a surge of calls and messages from individuals facing similar challenges, not only from Kuwait but also from neighboring regions including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar, Dubai, Lebanon, and Iran. This indicates a broader regional impact of the conflict on Indian travelers.
Volunteers linked to the initiative are present in parts of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, where they are providing essential local coordination, guidance, and support for Indians in need of assistance. Their on-ground presence is critical in navigating the logistical hurdles posed by the unstable situation.
Priority on Basic Necessities and Family Support
Rajiv Khobragade, a member of The Platform for Justice and Human Rights, emphasized that the current priority is to ensure stranded passengers, particularly families with children, have access to basic necessities until their travel issues are resolved. "We are trying to connect stranded Indians with local volunteers and extend whatever help is possible," he stated, underscoring the organization's commitment to humanitarian relief.
Helpline Numbers for Travelers Seeking Assistance
For those seeking assistance or information, the organization has provided the following helpline numbers:
- Rajiv Khobragade: +91-9960988159
- Mitra Swayamdeep: +91-7447516855
- Sahil Sheikh: +91-8482842395
