Nagpar Ravaged by Sudden Unseasonal Storm and High-Speed Winds
In a dramatic weather event, the city of Nagpur was struck by sudden unseasonal rain accompanied by powerful winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour late on Sunday night. The severe conditions persisted into the early hours of Monday, creating widespread disruption and damage across multiple neighborhoods.
Widespread Damage and Vehicle Incidents
The intense storm uprooted numerous trees at various locations throughout Nagpur, significantly impacting daily life and infrastructure. At Somalwada Square, a large tree collapsed directly onto an autorickshaw, completely crushing the vehicle. Fortunately, despite the severe damage to the auto-rickshaw, no major injuries were reported in this incident, which authorities described as remarkably fortunate given the circumstances.
In two separate occurrences, fallen trees severed electricity lines, leading to temporary power outages in the affected residential and commercial areas. These electrical disruptions added to the challenges faced by residents already dealing with the aftermath of the storm.
Most Affected Localities and Road Blockages
The worst-impacted areas included Manish Nagar and Somalwada, where several trees collapsed simultaneously, blocking crucial arterial roads and creating substantial inconvenience for early morning commuters. Specific incidents included:
- A tree falling on Wardha Road in Somalwada around 6:00 AM
- Multiple tree collapses in Shriram Nagar
- Damage reported in Paryavaran Nagar
- Incidents at Ujjwal Nagar Hanuman temple area
- Tree falls in Layout No. 3
Emergency Response and Overnight Operations
The crisis began around 12:30 AM when powerful gusts brought down several trees in rapid succession, triggering multiple distress calls to emergency services. Personnel from Nagpur Municipal Corporation's Trimurti Nagar and Narendra Nagar fire stations worked continuously through the night and well into Monday afternoon to clear debris, remove fallen trees, and restore normal vehicular movement.
Fire department sources confirmed that teams initiated operations as early as 6:00 AM and continued responding to emergency calls until late Monday night. The Narendra Nagar fire station alone attended to nearly ten separate distress calls related to the storm damage.
Property Damage and Swift Clearance Efforts
In Somalwada's Bante Layout, falling trees caused significant property damage, including:
- Damage to the entrance gate of a house on plot number 104
- Trees collapsing onto vacant plot number 110
Acting on information provided by corporator Sunil Dandekar, municipal teams carried out prompt clearance operations to address these specific incidents and minimize further disruption.
Restoration of Normalcy
By Monday afternoon, through concerted efforts by municipal workers and emergency responders, all major roads were successfully cleared of debris and obstructions. Traffic flow normalized across the city, though cleanup operations continued in some residential areas. The rapid response helped prevent more serious consequences from the unseasonal weather event that caught many residents by surprise.
