Nashik Village Secures Rs 67 Lakh for Biodiversity Conservation Project
Dapur village, located in Sinnar taluka of Nashik district, has been awarded a significant grant of Rs 67 lakh from the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA). This funding is earmarked for the establishment of a botanical garden aimed at fostering awareness about nature conservation and biodiversity preservation.
Funding Under Equitable Benefit Sharing
The grant, amounting to Rs 67.7 lakh, is part of the 'equitable benefit sharing' provision under the Biological Diversity Act of 2002. The NBA, established in 2003, facilitates such initiatives to ensure that communities benefit from the use of local biological resources.
Doulat Vaghmode, a programme officer at the Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board in Pune, explained the origin of the funds. "In 2024, a company utilized soil from Dapur village to extract microorganisms for producing probiotic products. Biodiversity laws mandate disclosure of material sources, and the company complied by sharing information about the village," Vaghmode stated.
Strict Guidelines for Fund Utilization
The funds received by Dapur village must be exclusively used for biodiversity-related projects, as per the Act's regulations. Village development officer Praveen Burase emphasized this point, noting, "There are restrictions on the use of funds under the Act. Currently, multiple ideas have been proposed and will be finalized by the Gram Sabha."
To plan effectively, the villagers have sought assistance from the Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board, the forest department, and other relevant authorities. This collaborative approach ensures that the projects align with conservation goals and community needs.
Proposed Projects and Community Involvement
Several options are under consideration for utilizing the grant, all focused on enhancing biodiversity and promoting sustainable development:
- Biodiversity Garden and Information Centre: A dedicated space to showcase local flora and fauna, providing educational resources for visitors.
- Tourism Development: Enhancing areas around a hillside temple to attract tourists while preserving natural habitats.
- Community Marriage Hall Integration: Transforming the village-owned community marriage hall into a hub for displaying Sinnar taluka's diverse plant and animal life.
These initiatives aim to not only conserve biodiversity but also boost local tourism and community engagement. The Gram Sabha will play a crucial role in deciding the final projects, ensuring that the funds are used transparently and effectively for the village's benefit.
This grant represents a significant step towards integrating conservation efforts with community development, setting a precedent for other villages in the region.
