Noida's Surajpur Wetland Hosts Nature and Bird Festival on World Wetlands Day
The forest department in Noida organized a vibrant Nature and Bird Festival at the Surajpur wetland on Monday to commemorate World Wetlands Day. This annual event, held on February 2nd, aimed to highlight the importance of wetland conservation and protect bird habitats through engaging activities.
Activities and Official Participation
The festival featured a nature trail and bird-watching sessions, encouraging visitors to connect with the environment and learn about local avian species. Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, K P Malik, attended the event and expressed his appreciation for the region's rich natural heritage.
Malik noted that migratory birds travel thousands of kilometers to take advantage of the favorable conditions at Surajpur. However, he expressed concern over the significant damage caused to nature due to rapid material and technological development, warning that many bird species are on the verge of extinction.
"A collective effort on the part of everyone is required to conserve nature and birds, and this was the purpose of celebrating World Wetlands Day every year on Feb 2," Malik emphasized. He added that such events play a crucial role in raising public awareness about conservation needs.
Conservation Initiatives and Future Plans
During the festival, Malik participated in a guided tour of the wetland, inaugurated a photo gallery set up for the occasion, and joined a tree plantation drive organized by the forest department. District Magistrate Medha Roopam addressed a gathering of school students, birdwatchers, environmentalists, and government officials, describing the Surajpur Wetland as an invaluable natural heritage not only for the district but for the entire state.
"It is a living example of biodiversity, and preserving it is the collective responsibility of all of us," Roopam stated. She later shared a detailed route map for the development of the wetlands with the media.
According to Roopam, the district administration is collaborating with the forest department and the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) on a comprehensive plan. This initiative focuses on water treatment for the Surajpur Wetland and improving overall amenities to enhance the experience for birdwatchers and visitors.
"The administration took the initiative to improve the amenities and treat the water of the wetland for a better ecological environment and to make the place on a par with other bird sanctuaries in the state," she explained. The plan involves consulting with environmentalists, who will be included on a panel, while GNIDA will handle the budget expenses.
Importance of Wetland Conservation
The event underscored the critical role of wetlands in supporting biodiversity, particularly as habitats for migratory birds. Officials highlighted that Surajpur Wetland serves as a vital ecosystem that requires sustained protection and enhancement efforts.
By organizing such festivals and implementing development plans, authorities aim to foster a culture of environmental stewardship among the public. The collaboration between government bodies, environmentalists, and the community is seen as essential for ensuring the long-term preservation of this natural asset.
World Wetlands Day serves as a reminder of the global importance of wetlands and the need for concerted action to safeguard these ecosystems for future generations.
