Odisha Faces Heightened Heatwave Threat This Summer, IMD Warns
Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stark warning for Odisha, predicting a significant increase in heatwave days during the upcoming summer season, particularly in the months of April and May. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra made this announcement on Saturday, following the release of IMD's all-India hot weather season forecast for March to May and the monthly forecast for March in Delhi.
Regional Variations in Heat Intensity Expected
Mohapatra emphasized that while heatwave conditions and above-normal temperatures are anticipated across the entire state, the intensity will be more pronounced in the western parts compared to coastal areas during April and May. This regional disparity highlights the varying climatic impacts within Odisha, with inland regions likely to bear the brunt of the scorching heat.
In contrast, March is expected to offer some respite, with day temperatures in the state projected to remain normal or below normal. The IMD DG noted that any drop in temperature would depend on the possibility of thunderstorm activities, which could provide temporary relief from the rising mercury.
Scientific Consensus on a Harsh Summer Ahead
The forecast aligns with predictions from multiple models and international agencies, all pointing towards a harsher summer this year compared to last year. This convergence of data underscores the reliability of the warning and the need for preparedness.
Manorama Mohanty, a scientist and head of the regional IMD centre in Bhubaneswar, urged calm despite the alarming predictions. She clarified that actual summer conditions will commence in April, with March serving as a transition period. Her remarks aim to prevent panic while emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking preventive measures.
Recent Temperature Trends and Local Observations
These comments come against the backdrop of rising day temperatures in Odisha during February, where several locations recorded temperatures between 30°C and 35°C or higher. On Saturday, Jharsuguda registered the day's highest maximum temperature at 36.8°C, while Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum of 35.8°C. These early spikes signal the impending heatwave season and reinforce the IMD's forecasts.
As Odisha prepares for a challenging summer, residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and heed official weather updates to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat.
