The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on Sunday that heatwave conditions continued to prevail across extensive regions of Odisha, with Jharsuguda emerging as the hottest location in the state at a scorching 43.3 degrees Celsius. The relentless heat has prompted immediate administrative actions, including school closures and adjusted academic schedules to protect public health.
Widespread High Temperatures Recorded Across the State
According to the IMD's detailed evening bulletin, at least 14 different places within Odisha registered maximum temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher, highlighting the extensive geographical spread of the heatwave. Following Jharsuguda, Titlagarh recorded 43 degrees Celsius, while Sonepur reached 42.3 degrees Celsius. Both Bhawanipatna and Sambalpur registered identical highs of 42 degrees Celsius.

- Rourkela, Bolangir, and Sundargarh: 41.5 degrees Celsius each
- Angul: 41.1 degrees Celsius
- Hirakud and Nuapada: 41 degrees Celsius each
Relative Relief in Urban Centers and Forecast for Monday
In contrast to the severe heat in western and northern districts, the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack experienced relatively milder conditions. Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum of 36.6 degrees Celsius, while Cuttack was slightly cooler at 35.8 degrees Celsius.
The weather office has issued a forecast predicting hot and humid conditions to persist on Monday across several coastal and southern districts. The affected areas include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
Administrative Measures and School Disruptions
In response to the dangerous heat levels, district authorities have implemented precautionary measures to safeguard students and vulnerable populations. The administrations in Khurda, Nayagarh, and Deogarh districts have officially declared school holidays from April 20 to April 23.
Simultaneously, the Cuttack district administration has mandated morning classes for all schools and anganwadi centers, adjusting schedules to avoid the peak afternoon heat.
