Odisha Braces for Extended Thunderstorm Activity as IMD Issues Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a forecast indicating that light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely to persist at isolated locations across several districts in Odisha for the next six days, until March 27. This weather pattern comes with significant alerts for residents and authorities in the region.
IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Warnings for Key Districts
In a detailed update, the IMD has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds, with speeds reaching 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, specifically for the districts of Balasore and Mayurbhanj on Saturday. Additionally, a yellow warning remains in effect for four other districts, highlighting the widespread nature of the impending weather conditions.
These warnings follow observed light to moderate rain or thunderstorm activities at various places throughout the day. Keonjhargarh recorded the highest rainfall of 20 millimeters during this period, according to IMD data.
Recent Rainfall and Temperature Trends in Odisha
Over the past 24 hours, several interior districts of Odisha have experienced similar weather phenomena, including lightning and gusty winds. The IMD rainfall report, recorded in the morning, noted that Koraput received the highest rainfall in the state at 42.6 millimeters. Nuagada in Gajapati district followed closely with 42 millimeters of precipitation.
The thunderstorm activities have also influenced daytime temperatures, leading to a noticeable drop. Chandbali recorded the highest temperature of 36.6°C during the day, while the city of Bhubaneswar saw a maximum of 35.2°C.

Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre in Bhubaneswar, provided further clarification, stating that thunderstorm activity warnings are expected to continue only in select districts over the next two days. This targeted approach aims to help local communities prepare adequately for the adverse weather conditions.
