PCMC Seals 2 Dry Cleaners for Polluting Pavana River, Pune's Water Source
Pune: Dry Cleaners Sealed for Polluting Pavana River

In a decisive move against environmental violations, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has sealed two dry cleaning establishments in the Walhekarwadi area and filed cases against their proprietors. The action came after civic officials discovered that these units were directly discharging untreated chemical effluents into the Pavana river, a vital water body for the region.

Foam on River Triggers Swift Civic Action

The crackdown was initiated after local residents and environmental activists raised an alarm on November 22. They reported the emergence of a disturbing layer of white foam near the Kejubai Bund in Thergaon. This visual evidence of pollution prompted the PCMC's environment department to deploy special vigilance teams for an extensive inspection drive. The teams scoured areas including Tathawade, Punawale, Walhekarwadi, and Ravet to trace the source of the contamination.

A senior PCMC official confirmed that units operating along the riverbank have been repeat offenders, frequently flouting pollution control norms. "Similar action was taken earlier as well and the drive will continue," the official stated, underscoring the civic body's commitment to the cause. To bolster monitoring efforts, the PCMC has this year engaged two private agencies for round-the-clock surveillance to detect and act against environmental violations across the river.

Activists Highlight Systemic Failure, Demand Regulations

Rahul Sarwade of the Thergaon Social Foundation pointed out that this incident is far from an isolated case. "There are several dry-cleaning units along the Pavana, and many release untreated effluents directly into the river," he revealed. Sarwade highlighted a critical regulatory gap, noting that there are no standard norms specifically for such firms. The chemicals used in the dry-cleaning process, he warned, could be extremely toxic and pose a severe threat to aquatic life in the river.

He urged the administration to look beyond punitive sealing of units. "The administration must go beyond sealing units and frame clear regulations for dry-cleaning establishments," Sarwade asserted, calling for a robust, long-term policy framework to prevent such pollution.

Pavana River: A Lifeline Under Threat

The Pavana river's significance cannot be overstated; it flows through core areas of the city and has historically been one of the main drinking water sources for Pimpri Chinchwad. Its pollution directly impacts public health and the local ecosystem. This is not the first time the PCMC has acted to protect the river. Last year, the civic body filed cases against eight landowners and three vehicle owners for illegally dumping debris into the Pavana, collecting fines totalling Rs 30 lakh.

The recent sealing of the dry cleaners in Walhekarwadi signals an intensified vigil. However, as activists argue, sustained protection of the Pavana will require a combination of consistent enforcement, higher penalties, and the establishment of clear industry-specific environmental guidelines to safeguard this crucial water resource for future generations.
