Pune Scorches as Temperatures Soar, Shivajinagar and Lohegaon Hit Seasonal Highs
Pune Heatwave: Shivajinagar, Lohegaon Record Hottest Day of Season

Pune Gripped by Intense Heat as Temperatures Reach Seasonal Peaks

The city of Pune witnessed a dramatic surge in daytime temperatures on Saturday, marking one of the hottest days of the season so far. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 39°C, while Lohegaon soared to 40.6°C, setting new highs for the current weather cycle.

IMD Predicts Further Temperature Escalation in Coming Days

An IMD official has indicated that the heat is far from over. "Our latest forecast points to a continued increase in maximum temperatures across Pune," the official stated. "Areas such as Lohegaon and Koregaon Park are likely to approach 42°C, with Shivajinagar potentially reaching around 41°C. Minimum temperatures are also expected to remain elevated, ranging between 21°C and 26°C throughout the city."

Widespread Heat Intensifies Across Multiple Pune Localities

Several other parts of Pune faced severe heat on Saturday, exacerbating discomfort for residents. Key observations include:

  • Koregaon Park registered a high of 39.2°C.
  • Magarpatta and Chinchwad both recorded maximum temperatures of 38.6°C.
  • Relative humidity levels plummeted significantly, with Lohegaon dropping to nearly 15%, indicating extremely dry and harsh weather conditions.

Expert Insights on the Rapid Temperature Rise

An expert from Vagaries of Weather highlighted the swift change, noting, "Pune has experienced a temperature increase of 4.8°C over the past two days, aligning with IMD predictions. Shivajinagar's 39°C on Saturday confirms it as the hottest day of the season to date."

Independent weather forecaster Abhijit Modak attributed the spike to seasonal transitions. "Temperatures began climbing after April 10, as anticipated. Lohegaon's 40.6°C is the highest this season, with Shivajinagar at 39°C. This pattern is typical summer behavior, driven by hot and dry northwesterly winds from Gujarat and Rajasthan, in the absence of any active weather systems," he explained.

Forecast Suggests No Immediate Relief from the Heat

Modak further warned that the warming trend is likely to persist through the week. "Shivajinagar is expected to see temperatures between 40°C and 41°C, while Lohegaon may touch 41°C to 42°C on certain days. Generally, Lohegaon remains 1-2 degrees warmer than Shivajinagar," he added.

IMD's local forecast corroborates this outlook, indicating no respite from the heat, with maximum temperatures set to continue rising. Importantly, no rainfall is predicted for Pune or most parts of Maharashtra over the next week, suggesting prolonged dry and hot conditions that could impact daily life and health.

Maharashtra Faces Widespread Heat Stress

The heatwave is not confined to Pune alone. Across Maharashtra, several regions are grappling with similar conditions:

  1. Akola in Vidarbha recorded a high of 42°C, among the state's highest temperatures.
  2. Many interior districts have crossed the 40°C mark, intensifying heat stress.
  3. Western Maharashtra, including areas like Satara and Sangli, reported temperatures in the 39-41°C range.
  4. Coastal regions remained relatively cooler at 34-35°C, benefiting from the moderating influence of the sea.

This widespread heat underscores the severity of the current weather pattern, with authorities urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
