Pune Records Unusually Warm January Temperatures
Pune residents experienced a surprisingly warm start to the week as temperatures climbed close to 30°C on Monday. Fewer people wore warm clothes, marking a noticeable shift from typical January weather.
Temperature Details Across the City
The Shivajinagar weather station recorded a maximum temperature of around 30°C. Several other parts of Pune reported readings above 29°C. Minimum temperatures also rose significantly after several cooler days.
On January 12, Shivajinagar recorded a minimum of 10.9°C. Pashan logged 10.4°C, while the NDA area remained slightly cooler at 9.5°C. Lohegaon, Lavale, and Magarpatta experienced much warmer mornings with minimums between 14°C and 17°C.
Weather Patterns and Forecast
The year 2026 began with daytime temperatures around 29°C. After a marginal dip from January 5, temperatures hovered near 27°C before rising again. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of IMD's weather forecasting department, explained the meteorological reasons behind this warmth.
"The anticyclone wind circulation has shifted slightly eastward," Kashyapi said. "This change brings moisture from the Bay of Bengal into central and south Maharashtra, including Pune. Medium to high clouds trap heat during the night, increasing nighttime temperatures."
The IMD expects this condition to continue for the next 48 hours. Minimum temperatures should hover around 11°C on January 13 and 14. Mornings will gradually warm up, reaching around 13°C by January 18.
Election Day Weather Outlook
On January 15, when Pune votes for a new municipal corporation after nine years, morning temperatures are expected around 12°C. Daytime temperatures will likely touch 30°C again, creating warm conditions for voters.
This unseasonable warmth contrasts with eastern India, where northerly winds maintain colder conditions in Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha.
