Pune Paralyzed by Historic April Rainstorm: One Dead, City in Chaos
A sudden and severe rainstorm lashed Pune on Thursday afternoon, unleashing nearly two hours of torrential downpours that brought life to a standstill across the city. The intense spell, which caught residents completely off guard, resulted in tragic fatalities, widespread waterlogging, massive traffic jams, and significant power disruptions, highlighting the city's vulnerability to extreme weather events.
Record-Breaking Rainfall and Meteorological Explanation
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Shivajinagar observatory logged 65mm of rainfall in under two hours on Thursday, marking the highest daily April rainfall since 1896. This shattered the previous record of 51.1 mm set on April 4, 1896. Independent forecaster Abhijit Modak explained that this unprecedented event was driven by lower-level wind convergence, enhanced by upper-level divergence ahead of an approaching southward-dipping western disturbance trough. This atmospheric setup promoted rapid uplift of warm air, while moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea fueled intense convective activity, leading to the deluge.
Fatalities, Injuries, and Widespread Damage
The storm turned deadly in the Parvati area, where a 60-year-old flower vendor, Ranjana Navnath Giri, a resident of Ganeshmala off Sinhagad Road, lost her life after a tree fell on her near Navshya Maruti Mandir around 3:30 PM. Two other individuals sustained minor injuries in the same accident. Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed across multiple locations, with approximately 20 fire engines, two rescue vans, and nearly 100 personnel engaged in clearing uprooted trees and managing related incidents. Additional structural damage included collapsed boundary walls along Baner Road, in Ravet, and on NIBM Road, compounding the chaos.
Severe Disruptions to Transport and Infrastructure
The heavy rainfall triggered extensive waterlogging, submerging vehicles on key roads and forcing commuters to navigate through knee-deep water. Traffic slowed to a crawl on major stretches like the Solapur highway and Magarpatta Road, with motorists seen pushing stalled cars as roads transformed into streams within minutes. Flight operations at Pune airport were severely impacted, with an IndiGo Ahmedabad-Pune flight (6E-522) diverted to Goa and several other flights delayed. Travelers faced major hurdles in securing transportation, as cabs and autorickshaws were largely unavailable due to traffic gridlock across the city.
Power Outages and Rainfall Distribution
Power supply was disrupted in numerous areas, including Kondhwa, Kothrud, Hadapsar, and Dhayari, affecting work during peak evening hours. Rainfall was particularly intense in specific zones, with NDA recording the highest at 84mm, followed by Shivajinagar (65mm) and Hadapsar (42.5mm). Other areas such as Pashan (36.3mm), Dapodi (29mm), and Chinchwad (28.5mm) also received significant showers, indicating a fairly widespread weather event that overwhelmed the city's drainage and emergency systems.
