Rain and Thunderstorms Bring Cool Relief to Tricity, Temperatures Dip Below Seasonal Norms

A sudden spell of rain, accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and gusty winds, swept through the Tricity region on Saturday night, leading to a significant drop in temperatures. Winds reaching speeds of approximately 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, along with frequent lightning, were reported across various parts of the area, marking a dramatic shift in weather conditions.

Meteorological Data and Rainfall Details

According to the meteorological department, light to moderate rainfall occurred at several locations in Punjab and Haryana over the past 24 hours. In Chandigarh specifically, 4.8 millimeters of rain was recorded by Sunday morning, contributing to a noticeable cooling effect. This precipitation played a key role in lowering the mercury levels, providing relief from the recent warm spell.

Temperature Variations and Weather Patterns

The maximum temperature in Chandigarh settled at 30.9 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below the normal seasonal average. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was recorded at 16.2 degrees Celsius, also three degrees below the usual mark. This sudden change brought cooler and more comfortable conditions after days of relatively elevated warmth.

The rain activity is attributed to an active western disturbance affecting northwest India, which also triggered isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in various parts of the region. This weather system has been instrumental in altering the atmospheric conditions, leading to the observed temperature decline.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

The weather department has issued a forecast predicting partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Over the next couple of days, day temperatures are expected to hover between 30 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures may remain in the range of 16 degrees Celsius to 18 degrees Celsius.

Looking further ahead, partly cloudy conditions are likely to persist throughout the week, with intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers anticipated until April 9. During this period, the maximum temperature is projected to range between 29 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature may dip slightly to around 15 degrees Celsius, maintaining the cooler trend.

This weather update highlights the impact of the western disturbance on local climate, offering residents a break from the heat and setting the stage for continued mild conditions in the days to come.
