Rain Likely in Tricity: Relief from Scorching Heat

Residents of the Tricity region can expect some respite from the intense heat as the UT Meteorology Centre has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall over the next four days. An orange alert has been issued for Thursday and Friday.

Temperature to Drop Significantly

On Wednesday, Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 42°C, which is 3.4 degrees above normal. However, the meteorological department predicts that the maximum temperature will drop to 39°C on Thursday and further hover around 36°C over the following three days.

Weather Conditions from Thursday to Sunday

The Tricity is expected to experience partly cloudy skies, accompanied by thunderstorms and rain from Thursday through Sunday. On Thursday and Friday, thunderstorms with lightning and squall winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph are likely. Meanwhile, Saturday and Sunday may bring hailstorms with lightning and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph.

Power Demand Hits Record High

Amid the scorching heat, Chandigarh's peak power demand soared to 421 MW on Wednesday, the highest recorded so far in May and June. According to the Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL), the peak demand rose from 398 MW on Tuesday to 421 MW on Wednesday, indicating a sharp increase in electricity consumption.

The second highest power demand of this summer was also recorded recently. The surge in demand highlights the strain on the power grid during the heatwave.

Authorities advise residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and take necessary precautions against lightning and strong winds. The expected rainfall will provide much-needed relief from the oppressive heat and help reduce power consumption.
