Unseasonal Rains and Hailstorms Batter Rajasthan, Damaging Crops and Disrupting Life
A sudden and dramatic weather shift, driven by an active western disturbance, unleashed unseasonal rain and intense hailstorms across Rajasthan on Thursday. This severe weather event persisted for the second consecutive day, impacting multiple districts and creating a complex scenario of relief and ruin.
Temperature Plunge and Meteorological Warnings
The western disturbance triggered a significant drop in temperatures, providing a much-needed respite from the escalating heat. Both maximum and minimum temperatures fell by an average of nearly 9°C, offering temporary relief to residents. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Jaipur has issued further alerts, predicting continued rain and hail activity. This weather system is expected to remain active until March 20, indicating potential for more disruptions in the coming days.
Intense Showers and Hail Impact Key Districts
Several districts bore the brunt of the severe weather. Sikar, Alwar, and Kotputli-Behror witnessed particularly intense showers accompanied by damaging hail. In Sikar, small hailstones fell for approximately half a minute, while areas like Bansur and Narayanpur reported hailstorms lasting up to 20 minutes, causing visible damage to infrastructure and agriculture.
Light to moderate rainfall was recorded across a wider region, including Sri Ganganagar, Churu, Bikaner, Jalore, Barmer, and Jaipur. Barmer received the highest rainfall at 16 mm, followed by Alwar with 11 mm. Several other locations recorded between 2 mm and 5 mm of precipitation.
Jaipur Experiences Pleasant but Disruptive Weather
Residents of Jaipur awoke to a notably pleasant morning, with the minimum temperature settling at a comfortable 21.4°C. The city experienced mild showers around 5:30 AM and again at 7:30 AM. The maximum temperature reached 30.1°C, which is about 3.3 degrees below the normal average for this time of year, highlighting the cooling effect of the disturbance.
Agricultural Sector Suffers Significant Damage
The unseasonal weather has had a severe adverse impact on agriculture, a critical sector for Rajasthan's economy. Crops such as cumin and psyllium husk in the Jaisalmer and Barmer regions suffered substantial damage. Additionally, harvested produce left in fields was also affected by the rain and hail, leading to financial losses for farmers. This damage underscores the vulnerability of agricultural outputs to sudden climatic changes.
While the rainfall provided a welcome break from rising temperatures, it also resulted in loss of life and property, illustrating the dual nature of such weather events. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the active system continues to influence regional weather patterns.
