Red Fox Completes Remarkable Transatlantic Stowaway Voyage
In an extraordinary wildlife incident, a red fox has made an unexpected transatlantic crossing from England to the United States by stowing away on a cargo ship. The animal, which embarked from Southampton, England, arrived in New York after a two-week journey, marking one of the most unusual animal voyages in recent history.
From Southampton to New York: An Unplanned Adventure
The cargo ship, loaded with automobiles, departed Southampton on February 4. During the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, the crew discovered the unusual passenger onboard. According to US Customs and Border Protection officials, the fox was found while the vessel was traveling to the Port of New York and New Jersey.
Upon arrival on February 18, the animal was transferred to the Bronx Zoo the following day for care and examination. The 11-pound male fox, estimated to be approximately two years old, has shown no major health issues after initial veterinary assessments.
Recovery and Care at the Bronx Zoo
Keith Lovett, a representative from the zoo, reported to the Associated Press that the fox appears to be adapting well to his new temporary home. "He seems to be settling in well," Lovett stated. "It's gone through a lot." The animal is currently receiving specialized care at the zoo's veterinary center while undergoing comprehensive health screenings.
The fox belongs to the species Vulpes vulpes, commonly known as the red fox, which is one of the world's most widespread mammal species. These animals are naturally found across Europe, Asia, North America, and parts of Africa, though this particular individual took an unconventional route to reach the Western Hemisphere.
From Cargo Deck to Veterinary Care
After his unexpected sea voyage, the fox is now enjoying a more stable diet at the zoo, which includes:
- Fresh produce items
- Protein sources
- Specialized biscuit-like food formulated for wildlife
This represents a significant improvement from whatever sustenance the animal managed to find during his transatlantic journey. Zoo officials will determine a permanent placement for the fox once all health evaluations are completed and he has fully recovered from his remarkable adventure.
