In a significant initiative to support wildlife conservation, a Maharashtra-based non-governmental organization, Earth Brigade Foundation, has donated and installed ten solar water pumping units at strategic locations within the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. This project, completed on Sunday, aims to alleviate the drinking water shortages faced by wildlife, particularly during the harsh summer months when natural water sources often dry up.
Addressing Water Scarcity in Critical Habitats
The installation of these solar pumps is a timely intervention to combat water scarcity caused by the natural drying of reservoirs and water holes during peak summer. According to Jagdish R, the deputy director of the reserve, these units will ensure a steady supply of drinking water for wildlife throughout daylight hours. He emphasized that many natural sources tend to evaporate or diminish during this period, making artificial support crucial for animal survival.
Technical Specifications and Strategic Placement
Of the ten solar water pumping units, two are equipped with a capacity of 2 horsepower (HP), while the remaining eight are 1 HP units. These pumps have been strategically installed at key wildlife congregation points, including the rhino rehabilitation enclosure (RR1), Amha Tal, SD Singh Machan, and Sarauta. Reserve officials selected these sites based on detailed studies of animal movement patterns and specific water requirements, ensuring maximum benefit for the local fauna.
Inauguration and Financial Commitment
The units were officially inaugurated by Anuradha Vemuri, the state's Chief Wildlife Warden, on the eve of World Wetlands Day, highlighting the initiative's alignment with global conservation efforts. Dr. Sarita Subramaniam, the founder secretary of Earth Brigade Foundation, revealed that the foundation invested Rs 27.14 lakh in this project. This substantial financial commitment underscores the organization's dedication to supporting wildlife conservation and enhancing survival rates in the reserve.
