Trichy Forest Department Conducts Training for Nursery Owners to Boost Agroforestry
The forest department in Trichy organized a comprehensive capacity building training programme for tree nursery owners in the district at Mukkombu on Monday. This initiative aimed to enhance the production of high-quality planting materials and promote sustainable agroforestry practices across the region.
Expert Insights on Scientific Nursery Management
Specialists from leading forestry research institutions and wood-based industries delivered detailed presentations on scientific nursery management and strategies to increase the supply of quality planting stock. They emphasized that adopting these advanced practices is crucial for strengthening sustainable forestry and agroforestry development, ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.
Scientist R Anandalakshmi from the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) in Coimbatore provided an in-depth explanation of seed handling methods and certification procedures. Chief technical officer K Shanthi discussed propagation techniques for key timber species, while technical officer K. Suresh Kumar covered practical nursery raising methods for various timber varieties, offering hands-on guidance to participants.
Integrated Disease Management and Biofertilizer Use
Assistant professor V Bhaskaran from the Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI) in Mettupalayam presented effective strategies for integrated disease management in nurseries, highlighting preventive measures and treatment options. Deputy conservator T Kannan from the modern nursery division in Dharmapuri detailed the benefits and application of biofertilizers in nursery operations, underscoring their role in enhancing plant health and sustainability.
Industry Perspectives on Large-Scale Production
A Selvaraju, deputy manager at Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) in Karur, spoke on large-scale clonal production techniques and the importance of supplying quality material to farmers. From Seshasayee Paper and Boards Limited (SPBL) in Pallipalayam, assistant general manager M Selvam conducted an industry interaction session, and executive M Sivakumar delivered a lecture on the promising future of agroforestry, emphasizing its critical role in meeting the rising industrial wood needs.
Programme Participation and Recognition
Approximately 50 private nursery owners actively participated in the programme, gaining valuable insights and networking opportunities. During the valedictory function, certificates and honorariums were presented to the participants, recognizing their commitment to advancing forestry practices.
Deputy conservator K Saravanakumar organized the event as per the directions of principal chief conservator I Anwardeen and chief conservator K Geethangali. This training was part of the broader Green Tamil Nadu Mission, aimed at fostering environmental conservation and sustainable development through enhanced forestry initiatives.
