Trichy Swelters Under Record-Breaking Heat, Touches 39.7°C

The city of Trichy experienced its hottest day of the year so far on Sunday, with the mercury soaring to a scorching 39.7 degrees Celsius. This marked a marginal increase from the previous day's high of 39.3 degrees Celsius, underscoring a significant and sudden spike in temperatures that has gripped the region.

Sudden Temperature Surge and Public Impact

For several days prior, the maximum temperature in Trichy had been relatively stable, hovering around the 36 degrees Celsius mark. However, a sharp escalation began on Saturday when it first breached the 39-degree threshold. This blistering heat led to a noticeable decline in public movement during the afternoon hours, as residents sought refuge from the oppressive conditions.

Scattered Rainfall Brings Temporary Respite

Amid the intense heat, some parts of the district, particularly rural areas, received mild showers that offered a brief sigh of relief. The district recorded an average rainfall of 4.1mm as of Sunday morning. Specific areas saw varied precipitation: Pullambadi in the Lalgudi region received 18.4mm, while Thuraiyur and Samayapuram recorded 15mm and 7mm respectively.

IMD Forecast and Historical Context

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, under the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has predicted that high temperatures will persist in Trichy over the next few days, with some areas experiencing partly cloudy skies. Additionally, the minimum temperature in the city has also risen, climbing from 25.4 degrees Celsius to 27.2 degrees Celsius as of Saturday.

Looking back at historical data, the highest temperature recorded in Trichy during April 2024 was 41.3 degrees Celsius, while in 2021, it reached a peak of 42.5 degrees Celsius. This year's spike, though significant, remains below those extreme marks but highlights the ongoing challenges posed by rising temperatures in the region.
