UAE Launches Major Humanitarian Drive to Save Children from Hunger During Ramadan
As the holy month of Ramadan draws near, the United Arab Emirates has taken a decisive step in the global fight against child hunger. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, has officially launched the "Edge of Life" campaign, positioning the battle against malnutrition at the forefront of the nation's humanitarian agenda. This ambitious initiative is specifically designed to rescue five million children under the age of five from the brink of death caused by severe hunger and nutritional deficiencies.
Ramadan as a Catalyst for Compassion and Global Action
In a heartfelt message shared across social media platforms, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that Ramadan is a generous and cherished period, marking it as an annual tradition for the UAE to initiate a humanitarian campaign. He highlighted that this tradition extends the support and solidarity of the Emirati people to vulnerable communities worldwide. The holy month, he stressed, serves as a powerful opportunity to reinforce core values of compassion, empathy, and collective responsibility on a global scale.
Confronting a Stark Global Reality
The launch of the "Edge of Life" campaign comes in response to alarming global statistics. Sheikh Mohammed pointed out that in the previous year alone, more than 118 million children worldwide suffered from malnutrition. Tragically, among these, an estimated 2.6 million children lost their lives directly due to hunger-related causes. He described these figures as representing a profound human tragedy that demands immediate attention and action. It is not in the UAE's nature or values, he asserted, to witness such widespread suffering and remain passive or indifferent.
Strategic Implementation and Fundraising Goals
The "Edge of Life" initiative will be executed through partnerships with several international organizations, leveraging their expertise and reach. The primary objective is to raise a minimum of AED1 billion from both local and international sources. These funds will be strategically allocated to targeted programmes aimed at preventing hunger-related deaths among the most vulnerable children—those described as living precariously on the edge of survival.
A Call to Action Rooted in Faith and Charity
In concluding his announcement, Sheikh Mohammed offered prayers for the continued protection and prosperity of the UAE and its citizens. He reiterated the essential spirit of giving that defines Ramadan, underscoring that feeding the hungry and supporting the poor and needy are among the most meaningful and impactful acts of charity. The campaign aims to transform charitable donations into tangible, life-saving outcomes, making child nutrition and survival a central pillar of the UAE's humanitarian outreach during this sacred month.
By launching the "Edge of Life" campaign, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to global humanitarian efforts, using Ramadan as a platform to drive significant change and save millions of young lives from the scourge of hunger.
