Vidarbha Grapples with Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Above Seasonal Norms

The Vidarbha region of Maharashtra has been enduring a relentless heatwave for over a week, with temperatures consistently climbing several degrees above the normal seasonal average. This sudden and severe spike in mercury levels has triggered a sharp increase in demand for cooling appliances and refreshing beverages, as residents battle the early onset of summer heat.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Across Major Cities

On Monday, Akola emerged as the hottest location in Maharashtra, registering a maximum temperature of 40.4°C, which is a staggering 4.4°C above the normal mark, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Other key cities in Vidarbha also reported elevated readings. Amravati recorded 39.0°C (+4.3°C), Wardha 39.2°C (+3.2°C), Brahmapuri 39.4°C (+3.6°C), Washim 39.4°C (+3.8°C), and Yavatmal 39.0°C (+3.9°C). Nagpur, the regional hub, saw a maximum temperature of 38.2°C, which is 3°C above the normal level.

Meteorologists have confirmed that temperatures across Vidarbha are currently ranging from 3°C to 4.5°C above the seasonal average, highlighting the intensity of this ongoing heat spell. The region has a history of extreme March temperatures, with IMD records showing Nagpur's all-time high at 45°C on March 28, 1892, and Akola's peak at 44.4°C on March 20, 1892.

Surge in Demand for Cooling Solutions

Retailers across the region have reported a dramatic uptick in sales of air conditioners and coolers over the past few days. In Mahal, a prominent electronics market in Nagpur, shopkeepers noted nearly a three-fold increase in cooler sales, with air conditioners also experiencing brisk demand. This rush has led to price hikes and extended waiting periods for installations.

"We can deliver an AC within a day, but installation is now taking at least three to four days, compared to the usual next-day service. All our technicians are fully occupied with installation work," explained a retailer from Dhantoli.

Increased Business for Refreshment Stalls and Health Advisory

As the heat intensifies, roadside stalls selling traditional coolants like buttermilk and nimbu pani (lemon water) have witnessed a surge in business, with people taking quick breaks to refresh themselves during the scorching afternoon hours. With dry weather conditions prevailing and no rainfall reported in the region over the last 24 hours, the heat spell is expected to persist in the coming days. Weather officials have issued advisories urging residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours and to maintain adequate hydration to cope with the extreme conditions.
