Gujarat Forest Department Launches Major Water Conservation Initiative in Little Rann of Kutch
The forest department in Gujarat has officially launched a significant water conservation project in the Little Rann of Kutch, aimed at improving wildlife habitat, curbing soil erosion, and strengthening the ecological balance of this arid region. This initiative focuses on soil and moisture conservation through the construction of specially designed embankments.
Project Details and Implementation
State Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia announced that work is currently underway on a 1-kilometer stretch, with plans to expand the project in phases. Officials have stated that these embankments will help store approximately 1.35 crore litres of rainwater during the monsoon season. The stored water is expected to provide a natural source of drinking water for wildlife until winter, with the water body stabilizing over time to become suitable for sustained use.
"This is not just a storage project. It is an effort to develop a complete ecosystem in the Little Rann," emphasized Minister Modhwadia. He added that improved soil moisture will boost fertility and promote the growth of native grasses, making more fodder available for herbivores. This, in turn, is anticipated to support a gradual increase in their population numbers.
Ecological and Biodiversity Benefits
The reservoirs being developed are also projected to attract both local and migratory birds. A raised mound in the middle of the pond will be created to provide a safe resting and nesting area for birds and animals, enhancing the region's biodiversity.
Minister of State for Forests Pravin Mali highlighted that these scientifically built embankments will reduce soil erosion and help retain soil moisture. He described the initiative as an important step towards building climate resilience in arid and semi-arid zones.
