Major Operation Underway to Capture Rogue Elephant in Kerala's Wayanad
The forest department in Kerala has escalated efforts to capture a wild elephant that has been instilling fear and causing significant damage in the Vadakkanad and Valluvadi regions near Sultan Bathery, Wayanad. This intensive operation follows a tragic incident where a farmer lost his life, prompting widespread concern and demands for immediate action from local authorities.
Failed Tranquilization Attempt and Ongoing Tracking
On Friday morning, a specialized team including forest veterinarians and members of the rapid response team (RRT) attempted to tranquilize the male tusker, estimated to be around 30 years old. However, the dart failed to strike the animal accurately, leading the elephant to retreat deeper into the forest. Officials have since deployed approximately 70 personnel and four kumki elephants to support the capture mission.
The forest department is closely monitoring the elephant's movements, with the animal currently located in the Karipur forest area. "We are tracking its activity diligently. Efforts to safely capture the elephant will persist until we achieve success," stated the Kurichiyad forest range officer, emphasizing the department's commitment to resolving the situation.

This elephant has repeatedly ventured into human settlements, raiding crops and creating panic among residents. The urgency of the capture operation heightened after the recent death of a farmer named Rejeev, who was attacked while attempting to drive the elephant away from his farmland. He was discovered with severe internal injuries, an event that sparked protests and calls for enhanced protective measures from the forest department.
