Wild Elephant Triggers Panic and Destruction in Chatra Villages
Late on Thursday night, a wild elephant went on a rampage in several villages under the Giddhaur police station limits in Chatra district, causing widespread panic among residents. The incident resulted in significant property damage, destruction of agricultural assets, and loss of livestock, leaving the affected communities in distress.
Extensive Damage to Property and Livelihoods
According to local reports, the elephant first entered Tilri village, where it targeted a goat-rearing farm operated jointly by farmers Kailash Dangi, Sunil Kumar, and Rajesh Dangi. The massive animal completely razed the farm structure, destroyed essential equipment, and consumed stored grain, inflicting heavy financial losses on the farmers. In addition, a house belonging to Sona Mahto sustained severe damage during the rampage.
The destruction extended beyond buildings as the elephant uprooted a hand pump near the farm, creating an acute drinking water crisis for the affected families. This has compounded their hardships, forcing them to seek alternative water sources in the aftermath of the incident.
Further Havoc in Rupin Village
After wreaking havoc in Tilri, the elephant reportedly moved to Rupin village, where it continued its destructive path. There, it killed a cow owned by Rohini Devi and injured two other cattle belonging to Chetlal Yadav and Sanjay Yadav. Parts of their houses were also damaged in the process, adding to the growing list of casualties and property losses.
Forest Department Response and Compensation Efforts
A forest team led by Nishant Kumar promptly arrived at the scene after receiving information about the incident. The team conducted a thorough assessment of the damage to document the extent of the losses. Kumar explained that the elephant had strayed from its herd and wandered into inhabited areas, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain vigilant and avoid venturing out at night.
Details of the losses are currently being compiled and will be forwarded to the relevant department to ensure that affected families receive appropriate compensation, Kumar stated. This step aims to provide some relief to those who have suffered significant economic and personal setbacks due to the elephant's rampage.

The incident has left villagers in a state of fear and uncertainty, with many expressing concerns about future safety. The destruction of vital infrastructure, such as the hand pump, has exacerbated daily challenges, particularly in accessing clean drinking water.
