In a stark warning about the escalating environmental crisis, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday highlighted the severe air pollution plaguing Delhi, describing the city's condition as akin to being in a 'gas chamber.' Speaking at the inauguration ceremonies of the renovated Block Development Officer's office and the city's fifth Kalyan Mandapam in Gorakhpur, he emphasized that environmental pollution stands as one of the most critical global challenges today.
Delhi's Suffocating Air Quality Draws Grave Concern
Adityanath expressed deep concern over the poor Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi, attributing such hazardous conditions to human interference with nature and a widespread neglect of environmental responsibilities. 'Only if you protect the environment will the environment protect you,' he stated, underscoring the reciprocal relationship between human actions and ecological health.
He painted a vivid picture of the dire situation in the national capital, noting that life has become suffocating for residents. 'Look at Delhi's condition, life there has become suffocating. It feels like being in a gas chamber. The AQI is in very poor condition. There is burning in the eyes and difficulty in breathing,' Adityanath remarked. He further pointed out that medical professionals are advising vulnerable groups, including the elderly, sick individuals, and children, to remain indoors to avoid the harmful effects of the polluted air.
Gorakhpur's Pristine Environment Serves as a Model
In sharp contrast, the Chief Minister praised Gorakhpur for maintaining a clean and healthy atmosphere, free from the suffocating pollution seen in Delhi. 'The environment here is absolutely pure,' he declared, highlighting the city as an example of sustainable living. This comparison served to reinforce the urgency of addressing environmental degradation in other regions.
Long-Term Solutions: Forestry University and Health Implications
To tackle environmental challenges on a broader scale, Adityanath outlined long-term measures, with a focus on the proposed forestry university in Campierganj. He emphasized that this institution will play a pivotal role in increasing forest cover and enhancing farmers' incomes through forestry-based initiatives, thereby promoting ecological balance and economic sustainability.
Adityanath also drew a direct link between air pollution and public health, warning that polluted air not only damages the lungs but gradually affects the entire body. 'If there is no pollution, there will be no disease,' he stressed, highlighting the profound impact of environmental degradation on human well-being.
