Young Tusker Found Dead in Coimbatore Forest Range

A 12-year-old male elephant was discovered deceased in the Sirumugai forest range of Coimbatore district on Saturday morning. Field staff members located the carcass near Pethikuttai during a routine patrol and promptly notified forest department officials, who arrived at the scene to investigate.

Postmortem Examination Conducted by Veterinary Experts

Sirumugai forest range officer K Manoj coordinated a postmortem procedure, which was performed by veterinary assistant surgeons K Vijayaragavan and C Thiyagarajan. The examination revealed that the elephant's tusks remained intact, and no signs of external injuries were present on the body.

During the postmortem, veterinarians observed symptoms indicative of ulcers, potentially caused by the consumption of excessive fodder. Forest department officers explained that elephants can experience severe abdominal pain from overeating, and while many recover from such conditions, some unfortunately do not survive.

Timeline and Disposal of the Carcass

Officials estimated that the elephant might have died approximately three days prior to its discovery. Following the postmortem, the carcass was left in the forest to allow natural scavengers, such as leopards, dholes, and wild boars, to consume it, adhering to standard wildlife management practices.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in wildlife conservation and the health management of forest elephants in the region.
