16 Buffaloes Drown in Bein Rivulet
In a tragic incident in Punjab's Jalandhar district, 16 buffaloes drowned after falling into the Bein rivulet on Tuesday. The incident occurred near the village of Dhaliwal when a herd of buffaloes was grazing along the banks of the rivulet. According to eyewitnesses, a sudden surge in the water level due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area caused the animals to slip into the swift currents.
Rescue Efforts Hampered
Local villagers attempted to rescue the buffaloes, but strong currents and rising water levels made the operation difficult. The district administration was alerted, and a team of divers was dispatched to the spot. However, by the time they arrived, all 16 buffaloes had drowned. The carcasses were later retrieved from the water.
The owner of the buffaloes, identified as Gurdev Singh, a farmer from the area, suffered a significant financial loss. He stated that each buffalo was worth around Rs 50,000, and the total loss amounted to approximately Rs 8 lakh. The local administration has assured him of compensation under the state's disaster relief fund.
Heavy Rainfall in Region
The Bein rivulet, which flows through the Doaba region, has been experiencing above-normal water levels due to continuous rainfall in the past few days. The area has been on alert for potential flooding, and authorities have advised residents to avoid venturing near water bodies.
This incident highlights the risks faced by farmers and livestock owners during the monsoon season. Similar incidents have been reported in other parts of Punjab in recent years, where animals have been swept away by flooding rivers and streams.
