Over 38 individuals belonging to the Naga and Kuki communities are being held hostage in Manipur following the recent killing of three church leaders, local officials confirmed on Thursday. Rescue operations are currently underway to secure their safe release.
Background of the Incident
The crisis erupted after three church leaders were killed on Wednesday, sparking widespread outrage among various communities. In response, several Kuki-Zo organisations called for a 48-hour-long 'total shutdown' that began on Thursday, effectively paralysing life across the region. Shops, schools, and public transport remained closed as residents stayed indoors.
Hostage Situation
According to sources, the hostages include both Nagas and Kukis, and are believed to be held by unidentified armed groups. The exact location of the captives remains unknown, but security forces have launched a coordinated search and rescue mission. Officials have urged calm and assured that every effort is being made to ensure the safety of the hostages.
Shutdown Impacts
The total shutdown called by Kuki-Zo organisations has brought normal life to a standstill. Essential services such as healthcare and emergency supplies have been exempted, but movement remains restricted. The protesters are demanding justice for the slain church leaders and stronger security measures for minority communities.
Authorities have deployed additional police and paramilitary forces to prevent any further escalation of violence. Talks with community leaders are ongoing to de-escalate the situation and secure the release of the hostages.
